Upcoming Live Streams
MONDAY, APRIL 5, 2 PM EDT
We can’t bring our creations to life without lightning so we’re going to build a lightning detector as part of our wall display to alert us when a storm is approaching! Together, we’ll assemble and wire the lightning detector module to the Arduino UNO and see the results on an LCD screen.
MONDAY, APRIL 12, 2 PM EDT
We got our lightning detector tuned and working! The original idea was to have the results display on an LCD screen but the Wrench Army inspired another idea…
The LCD is a great option if we were making a handheld device but for a wall display, it will just get lost among the other larger features. Plus a digital-looking display won’t match the older laboratory look we’re going for. Instead, I’m going to build a faux cathedral window for the shop which will light up (either with LEDs arranged in a lightning design or back-lit image) when lightning is detected and perhaps use indicator lights along the bottom to display the distance.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14, 2 PM EDT
In this stream we’ll continue our faux cathedral window build focusing on the electronics and indicator lights.
MONDAY, APRIL 19, 2 PM EDT
No monster laboratory is complete without a Jacob’s ladder. I’ve been fascinated by them since I first saw the electric arcs rising in the old black and white Frankenstein movie. We’ll be building our own as the centerpiece of our wall display.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, 2 PM EDT
We pick up from where we left off with the Jacob’s Ladder and fine-tune the distance between the rods.
MONDAY, APRIL 26, 2 PM EDT
Mad scientists love their mysterious and colorful liquids so we’ll build two that will go right next to the Jacob’s Ladder. Help me pick the colors! If we don’t quite finish up, I’ll add a stream for WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28.
MONDAY, MAY 3, 2 PM EDT
To power all the elements, we need an oversized electrical box panel that will feature animated indicator lights, gauges and house our lightning detector. I also want to make it look like it’s been part of one too many experiments by adding faux corrosion and burn marks.
If we need more time to finish, I’ll add a stream on WEDNESDAY, MAY 5.
